Welcome to LITHUANIA
an extra service of European City Guide / ECG

Information about LITHUANIA Lithuania is perhaps the most diverse of all the Baltic countries, as it was once the powerbase of an empire that stretched almost to the Black Sea, and many examples of foreign lifestyle and culture were brought into the country as a result. Not least of these is the character of the people, which is said to be much like that of Mediterranean people. It certainly is the most ethnically homogenous population of the three Baltic states. In 1989 the French National Geographical Institute named a spot on the road to Moletai, 25km (15mi) north of Vilnius, as the centre of Europe. One of Lithuania"s great attractions is its beautiful coastline which has been named the Amber Coast, because for centuries this semi-precious stone has been washing up on the golden beaches. Curonian Spit is a magical, isolated 98km thread of sand, which is composed of dunes and pine forests inhabited by elk, deer and wild boar. Lithuania, like many countries in these latitudes, makes a great celebration of the summer solstice. An interesting Lithuanian folk-art tradition is the carving of large wooden crosses, suns, weathercocks or figures of saints on tall poles that are placed at crossroads, in cemeteries, village squares or at the sites of extraordinary events. Lithuania is showing signs of progress since its integration with Europe.
